Dodge Offroad Home From Stock to Lifted in Pictures Some Offroad Pictures of my Dodge
You are probably asking yourself,
"What is so special about this transmission
that warrants it having it's own webpage?" Well, to answer your question, this
is the best transmission money can buy. APS Precision makes the finest Mopar
transmissions ever and Wayne at APS personally built this one for me, per my
specifications. A lot of you probably know that the Dodge transmission are
very expensive pieces of dog crap, referring to the automatics. My 1/2 ton truck
came stock with a transmission cooler but that was just a band aid for a 46RE
that would ultimately burn up anyway and leave me looking at other options.
I decided to go with the option that would not end up failing again. I bought a
totally custom transmission from APS and now I will never have to mess with
this transmission again.
I had to get a new transmission after my
stock unit died on me at 73,000 miles.
Granted, I had larger than stock tires, but I was never "hard" on my transmission.
I did not use overdrive and did not let the transmission slip, I always prefer to
downshift over lugging it around. The stupid thing still crapped out at 73,000
miles! This is a common problem with Dodge 46RE transmissions. I could've
simply had it rebuilt, but there is a saying... you can polish a turd all you want,
but it's always going to be a turd. I wanted something better than that. So after
doing some research, I found out that the best possible bolt in transmission
for my truck was a custom made one by Wayne at APS Precision.
Here are the stats:
Brand new 46RE transmission, not
Premium seal and gasket kit, emphasis on off-road applications
APS reprogrammed valve body with TransGo shift kit and APS's custom tweaks
APS throttle valve kit that increases shift points
APS custom UHD sintered cast band
APS aluminum accumulator and blocker rod
APS high ratio band actuation arm
High capacity direct drum 4 clutch (increases torque capacity by at least 33%)
High capacity direct drum release springs (fixes 2-3 shift timing problems)
APS no flip rear servo with cushion blocker (fixes 1-2 pulldown on manual shift)
Update pressure regulator valve (no more buzzing)
No leak reusable pan gasket
Blueprinting all clearances including parts
No bend band apply strut
Specific rate intermediate spring
Custom heavy duty Bracket Fighter high stall converter (2400)
One piece custom piston upgrade to help with towing
Mopar deep aluminum transmission pan with drain plug
APS Submariner option, allows you to completely submerge the tranny
This transmission is built to handle
over 525 ft.lbs of torque and 650 hp. It
comes with a two year racing warranty that only APS can offer, and in 24 years
of business, Wayne has never had one returned. They are designed to live at
least 200,000 miles, but many are still running well over 300,000 miles with no
The Transmission Swap and Transfer Case Reindexing
Here is the stock unit being removed from the truck. Piece of crap!!
Here it is in all of it's (lack of) glory... the stock 46RE.
Ah yes, a real piece of art, the APS custom built transmission.
This is the stall converter (in the box) and the Skyjacker indexing ring and billet spacer
The truck is ready to have a real transmission bolted in.
Sitting in there... the bling on the pan is the drain plug.
Close up for no real reason.
Ah, now you know this thing is serious!
This is the stock NP231 transfer case with the indexing ring installed.
Here is a close up of the ring and spacer. See why it reindexes your transfer case?
Then we had to redo the stock crossmember so the front shaft could be connected.
Notice the angle on the transfer case, now my front driveshaft has a much better angle!
It's all bolted in! What a cool setup.
Thanks goes to my buddy Earl for his
help, he is an awesome
welder and an even better mechanic. Thanks bud!
